Near the end of April 7th's daily video highlight Michael Jordan hits a game tying shot with 3 1/2 seconds left over the outstretched hands of Vlade Divac. This led to an important overtime win (where Jordan closes out the game with 2 spectacular shots) in game 3 of the 1991 NBA Finals against Magic and the Lakers. This helped Jordan win his first championship (the second of 4 straight games the Bulls won) and hence, I think, the most important shot/play in modern sport's history (at least in my lifetime: born 1959). It is also clearly the most under appreciated shot/play in modern sport's history since no one (besides me) ever talks about it. Other people will point to Mike Eruzione's winning goal in the 1980 Olympics against the mighty Russian hockey team and Alan Ameche's overtime touchdown run in the 1958 NFL Championship Game which helped popularize both football and sports (in general) on television. I am not sold on Euuzine's goal because -- while it had significant political and nationalistic ramifications -- it had little to no long lasting affect on the popularity of the Winter Olympics or hockey in general. What do you think?

The most significant play in sports was when Dick Culler grounded out, third to first as the first batter for the Boston Braves on April 15, 1947.

What's so significant about a ground out? Well, the first baseman for the Dodgers, playing in his first game in the majors, was Jackie Robinson.

Michael Jordan's play may have led to 6 championships for one team. Jackie Robinson changed the face of sports forever (and the Dodgers did play in 6 world series plus one playoff series in the next 10 years).
