Are Coaches being Fired too Quickly?

Coaches are being fired over the past year at almost a feverish pitch. Do you think that the GM's and owners are being too shortsighted and impatient? I mean -- look at the Steelers -- 3 coaches in 40 years.

The better question is: Are GMs not being fired quickly enough? That certainly is the thought today with Tom Renney's dismissal as the coach of the New York Rangers. Glen Sather has been the GM of the Rangers for nine years in which the Rangers have not gotten past the second round of the players, and while Renney is not Scotty Bowman, Sather is not Ken Holland.

That was exactly the point I was going to make. Tom Renney didn't let Jagr, Shanahan, and Avery go and sign Wade Redden to a ridiculous salary cap eating contract, it was Sather.

Now the Rangers are probably going to hire John Tortorella to replace him and try to bring back Avery only to find that where Renney and Avery were a perfect match, Tortorella and Avery are not going to fit together.

Although Renney "only" made the 2nd round of the playoffs, both years it was after winning a playoff series without home ice advantage. (Trivia question: When was the last time the Rangers lost a playoff series when they had home ice advantage?)

Sather is the one who should be gone here.

Coaches need time to develop their teams and players even if some of those players or among the best. GMs today want a fairytale in the respect that, hire a coach gain a title. The reality is they are being fired way to early and business has too much of a hand in the game.
